VINÍCIUS CANTUÁRIA: PSYCHODELIC RIO

[Brazil]

Slightly pulsating, hypnotic and not entirely real – such was the concert of Vinícius Cantuária at Globaltica in 2008. His dreamlike music – full of the subtlety of the tropics and the trance of the urban jungle will resound in Gdynia again during a special opening concert of the festival – this time where the history of Globaltica began, that is, in the Ucho music club.

Vinícius Cantuária is a cult figure, although for years he operated rather outside the mainstream of the Brazilian scene. A composer, vocalist, guitarist and drummer who started as a pioneer of the Brazilian new wave in the 70s in the band O Terço, and then as a soloist he pushed the boundaries of bossa nova, samba and jazz, giving them a new, light and cosmopolitan quality. Throughout his years of activity in Brazil and the United States, he has collaborated with giants such as Caetano Veloso, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, Arto Lindsay, Brian Eno, David Byrne and Laurie Anderson – always remaining himself: a poet of delicacy, a master of mood and rhythmic nuance.

His latest project, Psychodelic Rio, is a tribute to tradition – but filtered through years of exploration, migration and creative freedom. It is not a nostalgic journey to Rio from years ago, but his sensual, pulsating vision – where classic bossa nova mixes with jazz improvisation, avant-garde, psychedelic passages and a light trance from Amazonian myths, creating an atmosphere full of subtlety, but also non-obvious sounds and innovative ideas. At Globaltica, Cantuária will present this project in an expressive trio – he will be accompanied by two excellent musicians – Paolo Andriolo (bass guitar) and Roberto Rossi (drums, percussion instruments). Their presence brings European sensitivity, fresh energy and improvisational freedom to the project, perfectly complementing the delicate pulse and lyrical singing of the leader. Cantuária’s concert is a mesmerizing journey – through a jungle of rhythms, hazy jazz and subtle ballads. It is a reminder that Brazil is not only samba and carnival, but also spiritual depth, psychedelia and meditative silence between sounds
