NOURA MINT SEYMALI

[Mauritania]

17/O7

Main stage

Noura Mint Seymali is one of the most distinctive figures in the contemporary music scene in Northwest Africa. Originally from Mauritania, the vocalist and instrumentalist comes from a multigenerational family of griots – guardians of the region’s memory, music, and oral history (she is the adoptive daughter of Dimi Mint Abba, a late legend of Moorish music). Her work is a living extension of this tradition, but in a modern, intense form.

At the heart of her music is the ardin – a traditional Moorish harp, which she uses to accompany herself. She is accompanied by a band whose electric bass (Ousmane Touré), guitar (Jeich Ould Chighaly – Noura’s husband), and drums (Matthew Tinari) lend a pulsating, almost rock-like, psychedelic character to the whole. It is this combination – deeply rooted tradition with the energy of contemporary sound – that makes her concerts so unique.

Noura Mint Seymali’s voice is powerful, penetrating, and expressive—she can shift from subtle, melodic phrases to intense, almost trance-like climaxes. Her music transports listeners directly to the vast sands of the Mauritanian desert. It’s a sound that defies easy categorization—raw, intense, and captivating, yet deeply rooted in the culture and history of the Saharan region.

Released on the Glitterbeat label, albums such as Tzenni, Arbina and her latest, Yenbett have brought her international acclaim and cemented her position as one of the most important artists on the contemporary Saharan scene. Her concerts are an experience that transcends music itself—an encounter with a tradition that continues to evolve, and with an energy that has an almost physical impact.
