Melancholy and depressive disorders. History, symptoms, modern treatment. It is estimated that, on average, one in ten people will develop a depressive disorder during their lifetime. People who experience chronic illnesses, abuse psychoactive substances or are economically disadvantaged are more likely to do so. The World Health Organization identifies depressive disorders as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. During the meeting, we will take a look at melancholia, or black bile, which in ancient times was linked to lowered mood. Then we will discuss the modern understanding of depressive disorders – we will learn about symptoms, models of the disorder and proposed treatment.
