Madalitso Band is a duo from Malawi that demonstrates how much can be said in music using minimal means. Their story is a journey that led not through music academies or recording studios, but through the streets of Lilongwe. It was there that Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni began playing together in the early 2000s, building their experience as street musicians and developing a style based on simplicity, rhythm, and direct connection with the audience.
For years, they remained a local phenomenon until they performed abroad for the first time in 2017 – since then, their career has begun to gain international momentum. Today, they perform worldwide, appearing at both major festivals (they have already played at events such as WOMAD, Roskilde, and Glastonbury Festival) and in more intimate venues.
Their music is distinguished by a distinctive, understated sound. The central role is played by the babatone – a single-string instrument with a deep, pulsating sound – supported by a guitar and a foot-tapped rhythm. This minimalistic set, supported by the vocals of both musicians, allows them to build hypnotic, repetitive structures that quickly draw the listener in and give their concerts a unique dynamic.
Despite their growing recognition, their music has retained its original character. In their songs, they speak of everyday life – work, relationships, and community life – in a simple yet incredibly evocative way. Madalitso Band reminds us that the power of music doesn’t always lie in complexity – sometimes simplicity, sincerity, and authenticity are enough to move listeners around the world.
