Kobo Town is one of the most distinctive bands on the contemporary Caribbean scene – a group that effortlessly blends the traditions of Trinidad and Tobago with the multicultural landscape of Canada. Founded in Toronto by Trinidadian-born vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Drew Gonsalves, the band is rooted in the experience of migration, memory, and rediscovery of one’s own roots.

The group’s name comes from a historic district in Port of Spain – the birthplace of calypso, a music that is simultaneously a form of entertainment, social commentary, and a chronicle of everyday life. It is this tradition that Kobo Town develops and transforms – their work is a contemporary continuation of the role of the calypsonian – a “singing reporter” who describes reality with irony, humor, and insight.

The central element here is, of course, calypso – but in a form far from a museum-quality reconstruction. The band weaves these rhythms with ska, reggae, dub, and soul, enriching the whole with a distinctive brass section, pulsating bass, and guitar structures that give the music an energy that balances danceability and reflection. Gonsalves’s lyrics explore themes of colonial history, migration, social inequality, and contemporary cultural tensions, often hidden within stories about seemingly everyday situations.

Kobo Town concerts are a vibrant experience—full of rhythm, narrative, and stage energy that can captivate audiences from Montreal to Berlin. It’s an encounter with music that not only entertains but also tells a story—about history, identity, and the world as seen from the perspective of the Caribbean and the diaspora.
