In March 2015, during a small concert under the slogan Globaltica presents – which was not a direct part of the festival – an exceptional Argentine artist – sometimes called the mystic of the accordion – Chango Spasiuk performed. This year, his concert will be a “full-fledged” part of Globaltica, thanks to which a much wider audience will be able to enjoy his wonderful music.
Chango Spasiuk is one of the most expressive figures of contemporary Argentine music – an artist deeply rooted in the musical tradition of his region, who was able to give it a new, universal dimension. Coming from the province of Misiones, with strong Ukrainian, Guarani and Creole influences, Chango has been restoring the splendor of traditional chamamé music for years – a style that was long marginalized, and today thanks to him is regaining its dignity and artistic rank.
An accordion virtuoso who can extract from this instrument both the wild energy of dance rhythms and lyrical, almost contemplative sounds. His music pulsates with the rhythms of the Gran Chaco region and the Parana basin, but also tells stories that go beyond geography – about movement, memory, nature and identity.
On the one hand, Spasiuk is deeply immersed in tradition – in his playing you can hear the influences of folk bands, the music of Ukrainian ancestors and Native American songs – on the other hand, he is not afraid of dialogue with world music, jazz or classical music. Spasiuk’s concerts are full of concentration, emotion and space – it is music that flows, breathes, leaves room for silence and reflection.
Thanks to his authenticity, modesty and artistic vision, Chango Spasiuk has gained recognition not only in South America, but also on the stages of Europe, Asia and both Americas. In his music you can hear both nostalgia and joy – but above all a deep respect for sound as a form of storytelling.
