Nestled in the Himalayas is a small kingdom whose ruler has long sought to measure the happiness of his people. Amber, a government surveyor, travels across Bhutan meeting residents in the midst of their daily routines—working in the fields, relaxing outside their homes, or preparing for prayer and meditation. Each conversation ends with a questionnaire designed to determine a person’s level of happiness on a scale from 0 to 10.
Warm, humorous and thought-provoking, the film explores happiness as an elusive and deeply personal emotion that resists easy definition. As he conducts his interviews, Amber begins to reflect on his own life. He dances, plays guitar and enjoys his work, yet at forty years old he is still searching for love.
Can emotions really be measured? Can the pursuit of happiness be a form of happiness in itself? The people of Bhutan may have the answer.
