“About the history of Kashubians in Pomerania”

[lecture by Dr. Tomasz Rembalski]

O4/O7

Dom Burmistrza, Gdynia

19:3O

The purpose of the lecture will be to synthesize the medieval obscure origins of the name Kashuby, connected with the titularity of the Gryfit family, the dukes of West Pomerania, and its subsequent revelation at the beginning of the 16th century in Royal Prussia (in Gdansk Pomerania). By that time, the name Kashubian(s) already had an evidently ethnic meaning and referred to people who spoke a different language from the Polish language. The last part of the lecture will present the birth and development of the Kashubian movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dr. Tomasz Rembalski is a historian employed at the Department of History of Gdansk, Pomerania and the Baltic Region at the Institute of History, University of Gdansk. Previously, he worked at the Museum of the City of Gdynia for 17 years. For the past three decades he has been researching the socio-economic history of Pomerania and Kashubia from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century, including the pre-industrial history of Gdynia. He is a member of the Kashubian Institute and the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association.
