Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from a father of Croatian descent and a Serb mother, Robert Šoko left the then Yugoslavian Republic after having served his compulsory military service and arrived in Berlin in 1990.

He coined there the name and crafted the concept of BalkanBeats project – now the legendary and cult parties series. For almost three decades as a DJ he mixes the wildness of Balkan folk celebration and the edge of Berlin nights. More than a project, it is a cultural battle; by playing original or remixed versions of traditional Balkan tunes, the BalkanBeats not only gives them a space within the world music scene and on the dance floors, but also in the memories of young people. These traditional sounds, mixed with modern electronic beats, hit the party crowd like a lightning bolt, rough and full of emotion, weeping and laughing at the same time.

BalkanBeats is truly a genre within world music, something which generated itself and will only survive in  cosmopolitan culture. Šoko established regular BalkanBeats events throughout Europe (Berlin, Paris, Budapest, London etc.) but also Mexico City & Tokyo. Yet for the past 10 years the BalkanBeats temple has been the Lido Berlin, hosting DJ sets and prominent live acts. Over the years, a number of incontournable bands of the genre have produced themselves on Robert Šoko’s stage, including Boban Marković, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Mahala Rai Banda, Dubioza Kolektiv, Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beat Box, Shantel and many more.

You can be sure that during a hot Saturday night at Globaltica, the party with BALKANBEATS will be absolutely crazy!
