Gdyńskie Centrum Filmowe, 17/07/2017

The Egyptian-French Trio Abozekrys will perform on the special, opening night of the festival at Gdyńskie Centrum Filmowe to celebrate 15th Jubilee of Globaltica  World Cultures Festival.

Mohamed Abozekry—the leader of the trio—was born in Cairo in 1991. At the age of 11, he started taking oud (oriental lute) classes with the Iraqi oud Master Naseer Shamma for four years. He also studied with the Egyptian oudists Hazem Shaheen and Nehad El Sayed. In 2007 he graduated with a blue ribbon from the renowned Cairo House of Oriental Lute (Beit El Oud) as a soloist, becoming at 15 the youngest oud teacher in the Arab world.

Abdallah Abozekry is a young and talented saz player. At the age of 20, he has already founded his own ensemble, the Abdallah Abozekry Quartet, which performs his own compositions, a blend of traditional Egyptian and folk music with a jazz flair. He is also currently working as a teacher at Beit El Oud in Cairo.

Trio Abozekrys is the story of the first musical encounter between two brothers, the story of trips back and forth between their torn native Egypt and the story of France becoming a second home base. Abozekry brothers had never collaborated on a project until now. They are united here for the musically and humanly explosive encounter of their two strong temperaments—showing us what contemporary music can become in this region of the globe.

The oud and the saz (as well as the drums played by Bastien Thé from France) emerge here transfigured, far from the usual treatments of these subtle and naturally connoted instruments. It is surprising in many ways including its vigorous composition. Stylistically, we are at the outer reaches of Arab and Western improvised music, far from the precursors of the genre (such as Rabih Abou-Khalil and Anouar Brahem). The Abozekry pair sounds incredibly current and modern.

They have just  played succesfully their unique mix of arab-ethnic-jazz at prestigeous Jazzahead! showcase festival.
