···DAGADANA - Polska / Ukraina / Mongolia

Show date: July 22, 2017

DAGADANA have triumphantly merged elements of Ukrainian and Polish culture through jazz, electronic and world music.
The band was founded in 2008 by Daga Gregorowicz from Poznań and Dana Vynnytska from Lviv. Soon after, Mikołaj Pospieszalski joined the band with his double bass, and since some time, Frank Parker and Bartosz Mikołaj Nazaruk are responsible for rhythmical structures interchangeably.

However at the heart of their music there are folk songs from Poland and Ukraine, they are very open for other cultures elements. DAGADANA found their inspiration in many sources: amongst their families and friends, at ethnic music workshops, as well as on their friends’ and families’ bookshelves.

In 2010, the band has released their first album titled Maleńka, followed by Dlaczego nie just a year later. Another album, List do Ciebie, released 3 years ago was based on an interesting idea: All the lyrics were based on poems by Janusz Różewicz (older brother of Tadeusz and Stanisław), who died during World War II. The band members wrote music for the poems.

Presently the band have embraced what tends to be overlooked today. Their latest album Meridian’68 collects traditional songs from many regions of Poland (including Kurpie and Wielkopolska), as well as Ukrainian and Lemko folk music. But you can also hear elements of Chinese or Mongolian music as well.

The Eastern influence is the result of an encounter with extraordinary musicians – Hassibagen from Mongolia and Aiys Song from China – during DAGADANA’s visit to Beijing.

The band won several prizes in Poland and played over 400 concerts all over the world including Algeria, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Singapore, South Korea and others.
